Second verse same as the first!

Henry the Eighth I am I am...I got married to the widow next door...

She's been married seven times before and every one was a Henry....

Well folks, I'm out again! This cough just won't go away. Bletch.

1st period, you're doing what second period did yesterday and vice versa. So, you’re reading Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor in the short story packet. Also read the intro on Flannery O’Connor and Southern Gothic lit that comes before the story as well as the piece on Good Country People that comes after it. Then answer the questions at the end of the story. You should do all the reading before answering the questions. Yes you can work in groups. Yes everyone must have their own set of answers. The questions are due tomorrow. ALL of that is fair game for the final.

You may not work on your research papers in the English lab until you finish this assignment.

2nd period, it's your turn in the lab. You are in the LIBRARY lab, not the study hall. There is a Civics final going on in the library while you're there so you will probably not have access to the books. Sorry I’m not there to field questions. Google is your friend for MLA questions. Also don't forget about Easybib.com. Remember with Proquest you have to click the blue button on the left to get to the login screen.

Sorry to be gone again. I will be there tomorrow come hell or high water.

  1. ok so Giddings what exactly is going to be on the final other then some questions about these short stories we are reading?

  2. Everything. We'll talk about it on Friday and Monday, but a little bit of everything from rhetorical theory to analysis to close reading. I haven't finished writing the final yet, but it's mostly done and we'll talk about it very soon.

  3. Hey Giddings, I was wondering when is the last day to turn all the missing assignments. Thanks!

  4. I dont think we should have this other assignment that was given to our class yesterday on top of the essay that we have to still work on tonight. I know its the last week of school but give us a break. Think about it and reply tonight.

ps. I think that we should get an extra day on our paper anyways. :)

  5. hey guiddings i have a couple of questions

#1 in my paper am i allowed to quote myself? (this is because i was going to say something about an experience that i have had at a public school vs. something that goes on in a public school)

#2 i realized that most of my research was for the waldorf education because i already know the information that i needed to use on the paper for public schools, do i need to still back that up with research anyway? (hopefully not!)

#3 is the paper due at the end of the day tomorrow or the period? because i wanted to have a few other teachers proof it.

  6. OOPS my first question i ment to say something that i had happen to me vs. something that would happen at a WALDORF school

  7. "Unknown" a.k.a. "Oh Hidden One", a.k.a. "Doesn't Want To Be Known As A Whiner",

    The paper is due Friday.

You had all class to work on the assignment and three weeks of relatively light homework (especially over the last week and a half) to work on the paper.

We may spend some time time in class tomorrow on the Good Country People assignment at least in first period (the sub got their instructions from the office late so there was some confusion for them), though the sub had instructions to collect that from you today (if it was assigned yesterday, then you're in 2nd period) so you shouldn't be having to worry about it now anyway. Problem solved.

Oh, and you've already been cut a break by not reading Gatsby and with me being sick this week we haven't done nearly as much of the short story unit as we would have.

  8. pss. Its really dumb how all of this is due tommorow when you havent even been in class for us to ask questions.

  9. unknown, I've been answering questions on the blog all week. Our first library day, no one did ANYTHING. I spent most of the period trying to chase people off of game sites. Don't get bitter and whiny about your own poor use of time. Three weeks is more than sufficient to write a 3-4 page research paper. You may certainly turn it in late for a reduced grade. Your choice.

I will not respond to any more anonymous questions.

  10. Yeah but we also have a lot of homework in all of our other classes, so when teachers like you try to cram it all in the past weeks your just pissing everyone off cause there is not enough time for the work to be done.

"Unknown" aka "only person not afriad to speak up"

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes, but the questions needed to be answered are in need of your presence.

Your not a very responisble and amazing teacher you think you are if you can't even answer a couple questions for a student.

    ReplyDelete
  12. AHEM!!!!! SORRY TO INTERUPT! But i did ask you a few question Mr. Giddings. i think Unknown should just suck it up and DO the work it goes faster then procastination does ans since giddings is OBVIOUSLY NOT going to give us the extra time just do it cause your wasting your time trying to convince him. and please giddings could you answer my questions from earlier...

  13. Emma,

In a research paper, avoid I. Talk about it in 3rd person. It isn't important in the text that we know it happened to you. When you cite it, cite it as personal experience. Keep in mind that academia values supported information too, so your public school argument should be supported by outside research as well (Fife isn't like Seattle or New Orleans or Bellingham per se).

It's due at the beginning of the period.

If anyone has printer issues, email it to either my school or Comcast address and come in early to print it out or bring it in on a flash drive or CD and come in early to print it out. As we've said before, the first 5 or 10 minutes of class aren't for finishing your papers

    ReplyDelete
  14. Emma, I've been sitting here typing for about 20 minutes. I answered your question as soon as I saw it. Sorry for the delay. I'm going off line for a while to go grade more of 4th period's research papers.

Oh, and I agree wholeheartedly with your advice to unknown. woot woot!

    ReplyDelete
  15. ps on my part Giddings i don't mean to come across rude to you or anything i know how you told us writings come across the wrong way on the computer. I just simple need some of those questions answered. THANKS!

    ReplyDelete
  16. COOOOOOOOOOL.

Thanks Emma. Just speaking up for everything that im sure you have been complaining about too.

    Have a great night.

Hope to see you tommorow GIDDINGS!

    ReplyDelete
  17. ok thank you very much. i was thinking maybe having an interview with myself? or how should i go about siting it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Whatever, unknown. Now you're really getting whiny. I can't answer your question unless you ask it. If you don't want it on the blog, email me at the Comcast address.

I apologize profusely for getting a respiratory illness. I certainly didn't do it to put you out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. WOW! sorry that they "unknown" person is being so rude and immature. I was just posting to say hope you feel better. and to people who are complaining about the assignment..... we have had it for awhile sorry you waited till last minute its not his fault..... and you try grading three classes worth of papers befor school is out. seriously teachers dont have it out for you there preping you for college sorry school isnt a walk in the park so dont bash on giddings he has a life outside of school (aka a family).... sorry giddings i just had to put my two cents in lol hope you feel better

mr. giddings, im finding that i take sides on more than one issue on my topic (ethics of stem cell research and cloning). should i include what i agree on and defend it in my thesis????

  24. Are we going to finish watching the Great Gatsby? I kinda wanted to see the end of it. I wanna know what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes that sounds like a good approach, Bryan.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, we could do that. As long as you remember where you left off.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Giddings...
I went to proquest and just used the regular search. Is there a different search for the journal?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mr. Giddings, i finished my book report note cards but do we have to have titles on them ? and do they have to be in alphabetical order like the citations?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hello,
So are the questions homework that are due tomorrow or should I just read or not read? Im confused. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mr. Giddings,
Just wondering if we have to put the MLA source on each card if we have 5 cards from once source, or do we only have to cite the source on one card and just make sure that they are labeled in the corner the same?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mr. Giddings I'm so sorry for my fellow classmate, whoever is doing this, because they should be thankful that you're not going to report this to anyone, and that you are trying to help us for when we get to college. If I find out who you are, if you're my friend, I will be VERY ashamed of you.

Feel better and take it easy and don't worry about what this person is saying. You're a great teacher and I appreciate all the work you've put into us. :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm also confused as to what to do for tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jessica,
When you run your search, your results should have a number of tabs across the top. It defaults to the all results (or something like that) tab. Then there are tabs for magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals, and I think something else. Click on the scholarly journal tab to find a journal as it will filter everythign else out for you.

    Brittany,
You don't need titles per se. Just keep the source cards and their corresponding note cards together. Don't worry so much about alphabetical order.

    Chandra,
There was definitely some confusion in your class. Make sure you've read it and we can probably make time to work on the questions tomorrow.

We'll also talk about the final tomorrow.

  34. For the plagiarism paragraph on the report do we just sign the sheet of paper you handed us or type it out?

    ReplyDelete
  35. hey can i have a movie as a source? and what should i do for the bibliography?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Allison, the MLA source goes on the source card. Then I'd label that card something like source "A" and then put an "A" on all of the note cards that have things that come from that source.

I think the packet has something on that. I know that section isn't great...I need to rework that some for next year.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Cassi,
Yes you can. Easybib.com has an option for formatting films (it's way down on the drop down list). Just fill out their form and they'll format it for you.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Brittany, you could do either with the plagiarism paragraph.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm signing off for a while to go grade. I'll check back in about an hour or so.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Okie dokie sounds good to me. See ya tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  41. A kind of silly question for you. I know on the MLA it says Times New Roman for the text. Can we use the default text that Office 2007 gives us called calibri or do we have to use Times?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh shoot. I printed mine at school, on 2007 and my font is calibri. I guess I could reprint it at school.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Adara, you can use the new default fonts (Callibri and Cambria). They are commensurate in size and spacing and have been engineered to improve readability. I expect that the next iteration of MLA will add those fonts to their accepted list.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Chandra,
Don't worry about reprinting it. Those fonts are fine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Where is the plagiarism paragraph we have to sign?

    ReplyDelete
  46. hey so giddings i might have a bit of a problem ive got my paper typed up single spaced its four pages but double spaced its eight. thats not so good is it?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jessica,
It's on page 6 or 7 of the research packet if memory serves (I don't have a copy handy at home).

    ReplyDelete
  48. Holy smokes, Jory! Overachieve much!

Yeah, that's way over the limit. That's a big no-no in college and you really only get 10% under or over so 2.75 pages to 4.33 pages or so. This is going to sound harsh, but cutting is a really good skill to develop. Cut and compact! Knock that baby down to 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  49. One last question Giddings I promise. On the work consulated page does there need to be a header on it?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Chandra, no it just needs a title "Works Consulted".

    ReplyDelete
  51. How do you put the header on the second+ pages? With your name and page number?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Stacey,
the packet give instructions on how to do that in Word. if you have the new Word, click the insert tab, then page number. Choose the 3rd option for top of the page and then just type your last name in front of the page number.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mr. Giddings,

On the bibliography it says to make the title one inch from the top of the page. So where are we supposed to put our name and date?

    ReplyDelete
  54. ahhhhhhhhhhh! Giddings are you serious! not even gonna lie that sucks majorly!!! my paper is now gonna suck

    ReplyDelete
  55. Cory, just use 1 inch margins and put your name and page number in the header like you do for the other pages.

Jory, yes it is très painful, but you can do it so that it won't be completely awful. Here's some grace...get it down to 6 pages and I promise to read the first 4.5. ;) No, seriously go to six pages and use this as a lesson on spacing your drafts so it doesn't happen to you ever again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. All right folks, I'm out. If you have a question that hasn't been asked already tonight, just do what makes the best sense and get some sleep tonight. Goodnight!

    ReplyDelete
  57. THANK YOU GIDDINGS YOUR MY NEW BEST FRIEND!!! :D i will seriously keep that in mind
